I've always dabbled in furniture for myself or friends and I never thought I could make a living doing it. It's a great feeling to take something that's seen better days and give to new life. My love for pottery came from my father teaching ceramics, and he taught me as well. To me, ceramics and pottery are different. and I wanted to have more control over what I created. We lived in Virginia Beach at the time, my husband was active duty, and I started taking pottery classes through the city. It was great because they explored a lot of techniques. I thought I would love the wheel, but it turned out that I was a better sculpture than a wheel thrower. A turtle was the first thing I sculpted and it has evolved over the years.
I'm a scuba diver and am passionate about the ocean's preservation. People don't realize that there's another world under there, and in many areas, is fighting for it's survival. With my pottery, I try to recreate what I see there so that maybe people will be more aware of the life there and maybe help in preserving it. I give to organizations that help rescue, rehab, clean up for sea life/ocean. I also give to other causes such as animal rescues, because it's important for me to give back.
Come see me if you're thinking of refinishing a piece of furniture, a frame, or whatever your next painting project might be. We carry Dixie Belle paints and have everything you need to successfully complete a beautiful project!
I love using driftwood in my work as it comes from my love of the sea and here you see one of my other favorites... an octopus!
